Jim’s Kazoo Come True

Jim’s Kazoo Come True

(VIDEO BELOW)

If I gave you a kazoo, right now, and asked:

Do you know which end you put your mouth on?
Could you make noise with it?

Would you get both right?

You might think, “Sure Dave – that’s easy. Only an idiot would get those wrong.”

This is the part where Jim Button jumps in and says, “Hey, wait a minute! I was in a really dorky Elf outfit, I was in front of 1500 people, I had NO rehearsal, AND I had to play the kazoo WITH AN ORCHESTRA.”

Well Jim, those are valid points. Especially the part about the dorky outfit.

As some of you know, at the start of the DKL season this year, I explained that my good friend and on-stage announcer, Jim Button, has cancer. It’s not fun, it’s serious, and he is in a fight. A drag it out, on the street, nothing pretty dog fight with cancer.

So Jimmy and I thought that while he was using all the science he could to fight this thing, that we’d test out if laughter really was the best medicine.

And when I say ‘laughter” I mean, “laughing at Jim.” Right, Jim?

We do a segment every show called, “Jim’s Bucket List” wherein I read an item from Jim’s Bucket List and we do whatever we can to make it happen, live in front of our audience. Interestingly enough, every segment so far has involved embarrassing Jim. You might be asking yourself, “Dave – how is it that Jim’s Bucket List seems to be things that are the OPPOSITE of things Jim would enjoy? And not only are they the opposite, they tend to be things that no one would want to do in front of a crowd?”

Those are some tough questions.

Some of you might even think that this Bucket List is something that Jim actually didn’t make up, doesn’t really want to do, and is actually just stuff the team thinks would be funny to put Jim through.

Well some of you might want to keep those ideas to yourself.

Because laughter is the best medicine, right?

This time, the Bucket List was even more special. Because Dave Pierce was part of it. Now – some of you know Dave as this big music producer, arranger, empresario type guy. The guy who did the music for the Vancouver Olympics, works with Michael Buble, Jann Arden and others, the guy who produces the Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show… you know … a big deal. He was part of this particular Dave Kelly Live – and he had brought his orchestra.

But the key piece here is Dave Pierce is also a friend of Jim Button’s. So I had a partner in crime to help me create something special for Jim.

So back to my questions:

If I gave you a kazoo, right now, and asked:

Do you know which end you put your mouth on?
Could you make noise with it?

Those aren’t the kinds of questions you ask yourself when you are facing big life moments. I realize that. But sometimes, you don’t need questions, you just need moments with your friends.

Because if you look at Jim and Dave and my faces in this number, you’ll see that sometimes when something big happens, when your friend is sick, it’s not about asking questions. It’s about two Dave’s telling their friend Jim Button that they love him in the only way two scared friends can.

Because laughter is the best medicine, right?

I hope you all had some great moments in 2016. And here’s to great moments with those we love in 2017.

Thanks Jimmy.

And thanks Dave. I think we got him. And now he knows which end to blow.
